Additional Actions at the 2019 Churchwide Assembly

At last week’s, 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Milwaukee:

Re-elected Elizabeth Eaton to be the Presiding Bishop, and elected Sue Rothmeyer to be secretary.

Presented a Declaration of the ELCA to People of African Descent. The text of the apology and a video of the presentation of the declaration is on CLOKC.church’s Chimes news page.

Commemorated June 17 as a day of repentance in the name of the nine martyrs killed at Emanuel AME in Charleston, SC.

Declared the ELCA to be a sanctuary church.

Approved a “Strategy for Authentic Diversity.”

Approved the policy statement: “A Declaration of Interreligious Commitment.”

Approved the social statement: Faith, Sexism and Justice: A Lutheran Call to Action, and the implementing resolutions.

Condemned white supremacy and named it as a sin. A news article on the social statement and white supremacy condemnation is here.

Approved an entrance rite of ordination for deacons.

Authorized the development of a social statement on the role of Church and State.

Set Columbus, Ohio as the host of the 2022 Churchwide Assembly.
